This project will provide sensory and calming resources to support student in my self-contained learning classroom (SLC). Many of my students have sensory processing and self-regulation needs that can make it difficult to focus, communicate and participate in learning. By adding sensory supports such as weighted blankets, calming materials, learning devices that are weighted, and noise cancelling headphones, student will be better equipped to regulate their emotions and stay engaged in learning.
In my Self-Contained Learning classroom, I currently serve 9 students with diverse cognitive, communication, sensory, and behavioral needs. Many of these students have disabilities that impact their ability to self-regulate, remain engaged, transition between activities, and fully participate in instruction without appropriate sensory supports. When students become overstimulated or dysregulated, instructional time is often interrupted, reducing opportunities for meaningful academic growth and increasing the need for behavioral interventions.
Research has consistently shown that sensory tools and environmental supports can improve attention, emotional regulations, classroom participation, and student independence for learners with sensory processing challenges. At this time, our classroom could use more of these items to consistently meet the needs of struggling students.
These materials will directly benefit every student in the classroom by creating a more supportive learning environment that promotes self-regulation, increase instructional engagement, reduces behavioral disruptions, and helps students develop the skills needed for long-term academic and social success.
If funded, this project will create a sensory-supportive learning environment that enables students in my Self-Contained Learning (SLC) classroom to better regulate their emotions, increase engagement, and fully participate in daily instruction. Grant funds will be used to purchase sensory tools such as weighted lap pads and books, noise-reducing headphones, sensory learning items, compression vests, touch and feel discovery books, and tactile resources, and other sensory supports that address students' individual sensory and self-regulation needs. These resources will be incorporated into daily classroom routines, small-group instruction, and transition times throughout the school day.
The project will directly serve approximately 9 students in my SLC classroom. By the end of the school year, students will have consistent access to individualized sensory supports designed to increase on-task behavior, improve successful transitions, reduce sensory related behaviors that interfere with learning, and increase participation in academic instruction. Student progress will be monitored through teacher observation, behavior data, participation during instruction, and progress toward IEPs.
Providing student with the appropriate sensory supports will maximize instructional time and allow them to access learning in ways that meet their unique needs. When students are calm,, regulated and engaged, they are better able to communicate, develop independence, build social skills, and make meaningful academic progress. This project directly supports the students by creating an inclusive classroom environment where every student receives the tools and supports they need for success.
