Our Stories to Structures project will provide Barrett Elementary students in grades K–5 with an opportunity to combine literacy, art, and STEAM learning through hands on building and design challenges. Students will read stories, explore characters and settings, identify problems, and use the engineering design process to create three-dimensional structures inspired by what they read.
Using materials such as cardboard and construction tools, students will brainstorm, design, build, test, and revise their creations while developing creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. This project will transform the art classroom into a space where students can explore how artists, architects, and engineers use imagination and innovation to bring ideas to life.
The Stories to Structures project supports all learners by providing an engaging, hands on approach that allows students with different abilities and learning styles to participate and demonstrate understanding in new ways. Students receiving special education services, English language learners, and students who thrive through visual and tactile learning will benefit from opportunities to create, collaborate, and problem solve.
The materials purchased through this grant will be used across grade levels for years to come, allowing hundreds of students to connect reading with real world applications. By turning stories into structures, students will develop confidence as creators, makers, and innovative thinkers.

As a still up and coming elementary art program serving students in grades K–5, there is a need for additional resources that allow students to move beyond two dimensional artwork and explore three dimensional design. Many students thrive when they are able to create, collaborate, and learn through hands on experiences. Providing access to construction materials, tools, and technology will allow students to develop skills that support both academic growth and future readiness.
This project will also support the needs of diverse learners, including students receiving special education services and students who benefit from visual, tactile, and collaborative learning opportunities. Through literature based design challenges, students will practice communication, perseverance, and problem solving while gaining confidence in their ability to create and innovate.
The addition of two laptops, one for the art classroom and one for the library, will strengthen collaboration between these programs by allowing students to research, plan and share their creative processes. Throughout the school year, students will participate in literature inspired design challenges that encourage them to analyze stories, identify problems, brainstorm solutions, and create structures using a variety of materials, including cardboard and other reusable resources. Students may design environments for story characters, create structures that solve problems within a narrative, or develop original creations inspired by themes and concepts from books. Each project will follow the engineering design process, which is to ask, imagine, plan, create, test, and improve.
The project will directly impact approximately 600+ students across BES by providing opportunities for every grade level to participate in meaningful STEAM based art experiences. Activities will take place during scheduled art classes and through collaboration with the library. Lessons will be adapted to meet the developmental needs of students in kindergarten through fifth grade, ensuring that every student has an opportunity to participate and succeed.
The Stories to Structures project will support student learning by strengthening creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and perseverance. Students will learn that mistakes are part of the creative process and that successful designs often require testing, reflection, and revision.
These experiences encourage students to take ownership of their learning while developing skills that transfer across content areas.
By the end of the school year, 100% of participating students will complete at least one literature-inspired design challenge using the engineering design process and demonstrate growth in problem-solving and creative thinking skills through planning sketches, reflections, and completed structures. Students will increase collaboration skills by participating in group design challenges that require communication, teamwork, and shared decision-making.
