The Math & Movement Mathematics Kits will transform math instruction by combining physical activity with hands-on, standards-aligned learning experiences. Unlike traditional math kits, these interactive materials engage students in movement-based activities that improve comprehension, increase focus, and strengthen long-term retention of essential math concepts. By making learning active and engaging, the project will support diverse learning styles, increase student confidence, and help improve overall mathematics achievement. Ultimately, this initiative will create a more engaging classroom environment while preparing students for long-term academic success.

Mathematics achievement continues to be a priority for our campus as students are expected to master increasingly rigorous Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) while demonstrating mathematical reasoning and problem-solving on classroom assessments and the STAAR assessment. Many students need additional opportunities to actively engage with math concepts beyond traditional paper-and-pencil instruction. Research has shown that incorporating purposeful movement into learning increases student engagement, improves attention, and strengthens long-term retention, making it especially beneficial for elementary learners.

This project will directly serve approximately 140 fifth-grade students this year, with the durable Math & Movement Mathematics Kits continuing to benefit future classes for up to 10 years. The kits will support all learners, including students who learn best through hands-on, collaborative, and kinesthetic activities. By integrating movement with standards-based math instruction, students will have more opportunities to practice essential concepts such as fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, and financial literacy in an engaging and meaningful way.

Currently, students spend much of their math instruction seated, despite evidence that active learning improves focus and academic performance. While teachers strive to provide engaging lessons, access to high-quality movement-based instructional resources is limited due to budget constraints. Funding this project will provide a sustainable resource that transforms daily math instruction, increases student participation and confidence, and helps improve conceptual understanding and academic achievement. Because the activity mats are designed to last up to 10 years, this investment will positively impact hundreds of students over time while requiring little to no ongoing cost.

The grant funds will be used to purchase Math & Movement Mathematics Kits, including durable floor mats and instructional activities that will be implemented as part of regular mathematics instruction. These materials will provide students with opportunities to practice skills through movement while strengthening conceptual understanding rather than relying only on memorization.

Grant-funded activities will include:

Daily Math Movement Activities:
Students will use Math & Movement mats during daily instruction, math centers, and small-group lessons to practice and reinforce skills such as multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, geometry, measurement, and problem-solving. Students will actively participate by moving through activities while applying mathematical concepts.

Small-Group Intervention and Enrichment:
Teachers will use the materials to provide targeted instruction for students needing additional support while also creating enrichment opportunities for students who are ready to extend their mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.

STAAR Preparation and Skill Review:
Students will participate in interactive review activities designed to strengthen mastery of essential TEKS, increase mathematical fluency, and build confidence before assessments. The movement-based approach will allow students to revisit important skills in a meaningful and engaging way.

Kinesthetic Learning Stations:
Students will rotate through movement-based stations where they solve problems, explain their thinking, collaborate with peers, and apply mathematical concepts. These stations will provide opportunities for students to learn through visual, auditory, motor, and kinesthetic experiences.

Math Buddy Leadership Program:
Students will have opportunities to develop leadership skills by becoming “Math Buddies.” Students will be trained to support younger students by modeling problem-solving strategies, explaining math concepts, and encouraging others during learning activities.

Family and Community Engagement Activities:
Math & Movement activities will be incorporated into Family Fun Nights where students, parents, community members, and volunteers can participate in engaging math experiences together. These events will allow families to experience firsthand how movement-based learning supports student achievement.

Movement-Based Learning During Transitions and Flexible Learning Times:
The materials will also be used during transitions, intervention periods, before-school or after-school opportunities, and other flexible learning times to provide students with additional opportunities to practice skills while incorporating physical activity into the school day.

Key stages of implementation will include scheduling training, introducing the materials, integrating activities into the existing curriculum, and evaluating student progress. Teachers will incorporate the materials into regular instruction while increasing movement opportunities throughout the school day. Pre-tests and post-tests will be used when appropriate to measure student growth in specific skills and concepts.

The Math & Movement Mathematics Kits are innovative because they combine multiple learning modalities in a seamless, engaging, and standards-aligned approach. The program allows students to learn through movement while also incorporating visual and auditory strategies. By adding kinesthetic strategies to instruction, students who have struggled with traditional learning approaches will discover new ways to access and understand mathematical concepts.

This project will help students recognize that they are capable learners and mathematicians. Through active participation, repeated practice, and meaningful experiences, students will build confidence, strengthen academic skills, and develop a positive attitude toward mathematics.
The goal of the Math & Movement Mathematics Kits project is to increase student achievement, engagement, confidence, and mathematical fluency by integrating movement-based learning into daily mathematics instruction. This project will provide students with creative, hands-on opportunities to strengthen number sense, develop problem-solving skills, and practice essential concepts until mastery is achieved.

By incorporating physical activity with academic instruction, students will have opportunities to experience mathematics in a way that is engaging, meaningful, and accessible to a variety of learning styles. The project will support students in developing a stronger mathematical foundation while encouraging collaboration, confidence, and a positive attitude toward learning.
