The Science Penguin aligns with our TEKS and includes: labs, phenomenon, STEM, slides and notes, picture dictionary, task cards, sorts, articles, digital activities, spiral reviews, vocabulary and interactive notebook pages. This resources can be used for differentation in scaffolding as well as extensions.
Science is most meaningful when students have opportunities to explore, investigate, and interact with concepts—not just read about them. Currently, much of our science instruction relies on reading from the textbook and completing written assignments. While these are valuable components of learning, we want to provide students with richer, more engaging experiences that deepen their understanding.
Science Penguin resources would transform our instruction by providing visual vocabulary, interactive notes, sorting activities, hands-on investigations, and additional labs that align with our curriculum. The resource also includes engaging informational articles that can be used for enrichment, extension activities, and student projects.
These materials will give teachers multiple ways to assess student understanding beyond traditional tests. Through interactive activities, discussions, and hands-on learning, we can better monitor student progress and address misconceptions as they arise.
The visual supports included in Science Penguin are especially beneficial for our special education students and emergent bilingual learners. This project will serve approximately all third-grade students on our campus throughout the 2026–2027 school year. Instruction will take place in our third-grade classrooms during daily science lessons. The Science Penguin resources will be integrated into every science unit to provide students with visual vocabulary, interactive notebook activities, hands-on investigations, science sorts, graphic organizers, informational texts, and formative assessments that align with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
Our goal is to move beyond a classroom where students primarily read and write about science to one where they actively engage in scientific thinking. Students will analyze data, make predictions, construct explanations, participate in collaborative discussions, and complete inquiry-based activities that promote deeper understanding. Interactive notebook components will encourage students to organize their thinking while creating a personalized resource they can revisit throughout the year.
The grant-funded resources will also provide opportunities for frequent formative assessment. Rather than relying primarily on unit tests, teachers will use vocabulary sorts, science notebooks, interactive activities, performance tasks, and discussion prompts to monitor student understanding. This allows misconceptions to be identified early and instruction to be adjusted based on student needs.
Science Penguin resources are especially beneficial for our diverse learners. The visual vocabulary, diagrams, photographs, and scaffolded activities support emergent bilingual students by strengthening academic language while providing meaningful visual connections to new concepts. Students will engage with scientific concepts through reading, writing, discussion, visual supports, collaborative investigations, and hands-on exploration. Teachers will differentiate instruction using the included extension articles, enrichment activities, and scaffolded supports so every student is appropriately challenged.

The National Research Council's A Framework for K–12 Science Education emphasizes that students develop deeper conceptual understanding when they actively engage in scientific practices rather than simply memorizing facts.
