The Digital Media and Yearbook Lab will provide students with hands-on experience in journalism, photography, graphic design, interviewing, and multimedia storytelling through the school’s yearbook and commercial photography program. Using industry-standard tools such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and professional photography equipment, students will develop real-world career skills while documenting the culture, achievements, and history of the school community. Grant funding will support the purchase of cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, storage devices, and digital media resources that will expand student access to high-quality media production experiences. This project will increase student engagement, strengthen communication and leadership skills, and prepare students for future college and career opportunities in journalism, communications, marketing, and digital media fields.
The Digital Media and Yearbook Lab is designed to give students meaningful, real-world experiences in photography, journalism, graphic design, and digital storytelling through our school’s yearbook and media program. Students today spend a large amount of time consuming digital media, but many do not have opportunities in school to learn how to professionally create and produce it. This project would allow students to build those skills while also documenting the stories, accomplishments, and culture of our campus community.
The target group for this project includes approximately 130 students enrolled in yearbook or commercial photography, but the impact goes far beyond those students. The entire student body benefits from stronger event coverage, increased representation in school publications, and a yearbook that more accurately captures the experiences and achievements of all students on campus. Parents, staff, and community members also benefit from a more professional and inclusive record of the school year.
This project is important because it provides students with practical skills they can use in college, future careers, and everyday life. Through yearbook and digital media production, students develop communication, collaboration, leadership, time management, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Students learn how to work under deadlines, collaborate as part of a team, accept feedback, and produce professional-quality work for authentic audiences.
Our campus is also continuing to grow and will soon move to the 6A level for the first time. With that growth comes larger student populations, more athletic teams, more organizations, more events, and a greater need for student media coverage. Our current equipment and resources are limited and no longer meet the needs of a growing campus. As our school continues to expand, the demand for quality coverage, organization, and media production will continue to increase both now and in the future.
This project is intended to expand and strengthen our current yearbook and student media program by giving students access to the tools and experiences needed to create professional-quality media while building practical career and communication skills. Students involved in the program will gain experience in photography, journalism, interviewing, graphic design, editing, and digital publishing while working on real projects that directly impact the school community.
Our campus is growing rapidly and will move to the 6A level for the first time. With that growth comes a much larger need for student media coverage. There will be more athletic teams, more student organizations, more events, and a larger student body to represent in the yearbook and school media coverage. Right now, our students are trying to cover events with limited and outdated equipment, and in many cases they have to share equipment to take photographs or create content. As our school continues to grow, our current resources will no longer be enough to meet the needs of the program or accurately document the experiences of our students.
Grant funds would be used to purchase professional cameras, lenses, memory cards, storage devices, lighting equipment, tripods, and other digital media resources that students can use throughout the school year. Students would use these resources to photograph school events, interview students and staff, create yearbook spreads, design promotional graphics, and produce multimedia projects that highlight campus life. Students will also use Adobe InDesign and other digital tools to learn professional layout and design skills while collaborating as part of a production team. This project also supports the district’s mission of personalized learning because students can contribute in different ways based on their interests and strengths. Some students may focus on photography, while others may prefer writing, interviewing, graphic design, editing, or leadership roles within the program. Students will be able to take ownership of projects and develop skills that align with their future college and career goals.
The project includes several measurable goals for student growth and program improvement. By the end of the school year, 100% of students in the program will complete at least one major multimedia or publication project using professional digital media equipment and design software. Students will also increase campus media coverage by attending and documenting more school events throughout the year. In addition, students will create a completed yearbook that better reflects the size, diversity, and activities of a growing 6A campus.
Another goal is to improve the quality and consistency of student-produced media. With access to better equipment and training, students will produce higher-quality photographs, stronger layouts, and more professional publications. Students will also build digital portfolios of their work that can be used for future college applications, scholarships, internships, or career opportunities.
Research shows that students are more engaged when they participate in project-based learning connected to authentic real-world experiences. Programs focused on journalism, media production, and digital communication help students develop critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills that are essential for college and career readiness. Career-focused programs that allow students to apply skills in meaningful ways also increase student confidence and engagement in school.
The Digital Media and Yearbook Lab will help transform the current yearbook program into a stronger student-led media program that can grow alongside our campus. As our school enters a new stage as a 6A campus, students need access to the tools and opportunities necessary to tell the stories of a much larger and more active school community. This project will give students those opportunities while helping them build valuable skills that will benefit them long after graduation.
