The Texas Thespians Festival is an opportunity for theatre scholars to attend workshops led by industry professionals, audition for professional performance companies - such as Disney Entertainment, Encore Theatrical Group, IATSE, Stage Corp, and many more - and the ability for Junior and Senior students to audition for over 100 collegiate theatre programs at distinguished universities.
With our student population being largely economically disadvantaged the ability to alleviate the burden of this $200 registration fee per student would take the cost of attending that our students would shoulder from $385 to $185. By bringing 25 members of our International Thespian Honor Troupe to this festival, we would grow our program's talent pool exponentially.
This project will provide 25 theatre students with the opportunity to attend the Texas Thespian State Festival in Grapevine, Texas, where they will participate in educational workshops, audition for college theatre programs and scholarships, and learn from experienced theatre educators and university professors from across Texas. Grant funds will be used to cover student registration and audition fees, removing financial barriers that might otherwise prevent participation.
The goal of this project is to increase student achievement, college readiness, and career awareness through authentic theatre learning experiences beyond the classroom. By the conclusion of the conference, 100% of participating students will attend at least three educational workshops aligned with their individual interests, and at least 90% will demonstrate increased knowledge of theatre techniques, college opportunities, or career pathways through pre- and post-conference surveys. Following the conference, each student will complete a written reflection and share newly learned skills with classmates, extending the project’s impact beyond the 25 participants.
Students will prepare for the conference through audition coaching, portfolio development, and workshops on professionalism and college readiness. During the conference, they will participate in sessions covering acting, technical theatre, directing, design, stage management, leadership, and audition techniques. Eligible students will audition for scholarships and university theatre programs, gaining valuable experience while interacting directly with college faculty.
This project directly impacts student learning by providing access to high-quality instruction from theatre professionals and higher education faculty. Students will strengthen artistic skills while developing communication, collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, and leadership abilities that transfer to both academic and career settings. The conference also exposes students to postsecondary opportunities they may not otherwise experience. In previous years, students from our theatre program have auditioned at this conference and received scholarship offers and recruitment opportunities from universities, demonstrating the long-term value of participation.
The project supports the district’s mission of personalizing learning by allowing students to select workshops based on their individual interests and career goals. Whether students are interested in acting, technical theatre, design, or stage management, they will receive specialized instruction that complements classroom learning and prepares them for future success.
Research supports expanding student access to arts education. The National Endowment for the Arts reports that participation in the arts is associated with improved academic achievement, student engagement, and social-emotional development. Additionally, the Arts Education Partnership has found that theatre education strengthens creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking—skills essential for success in college, careers, and life.
By eliminating financial barriers, this project will provide equitable access to advanced theatre education while inspiring students to pursue higher education and careers in the performing arts.
