My 6th grade Reading Language Arts classroom includes a diverse group of learners, including Emergent Bilingual students, students receiving Special Education services, and students with a wide range of reading and writing abilities. Reading and writing lessons regularly include teacher modeling, read-alouds, class discussions, guided practice, and step-by-step directions. For students to participate successfully, they need to be able to clearly hear instruction and see the examples being modeled.

At the present time, students may have difficulty seeing smaller text or specific details when I model directly from a book, worksheet, or student example. A document camera and presenter remote would allow me to enlarge materials and clearly show each step while students follow along with their own copies.
Research on dual coding supports presenting information through both words and relevant visuals. When students hear an explanation while also seeing a meaningful example, they have more than one way to understand and remember the information. This is especially helpful for students who benefit from language support, visual cues, chunked directions, or repeated modeling.
