This project will provide two interactive Smart Boards for a 7th Grade English Language Arts classroom and a 6th Grade Mathematics classroom to create engaging, student-centered learning environments. The Smart Boards will be used daily for small-group instruction, accelerated learning, intervention, enrichment, collaborative learning, and differentiated instruction aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). By increasing student engagement and providing immediate feedback through interactive lessons, this project will improve academic achievement while preparing students for success on STAAR assessments. The technology will transform traditional instruction into meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that benefit all learners.

Today's classrooms require instruction that is flexible, engaging, and responsive to the diverse needs of students. Our 7th Grade English Language Arts and 6th Grade Mathematics classrooms include students performing significantly below grade level, students requiring accelerated instruction under House Bill 1416, multilingual learners, students receiving special education services, and students ready for advanced academic challenges. Meeting these varying needs within a single classroom requires instructional tools that support personalized learning and immediate feedback.

Currently, instruction relies primarily on a teacher computer connected to an Apple computer and projector. While this setup allows information to be displayed, it limits student interaction. Students are often passive observers instead of active participants who manipulate content, solve problems collaboratively, annotate text, explain mathematical reasoning, and receive immediate feedback.

Interactive Smart Boards would transform instruction by creating highly engaging learning environments where students actively participate in their own learning.

In 7th Grade English Language Arts, students must master rigorous TEKS that require them to analyze literary and informational texts, identify theme and central idea, evaluate an author's purpose and craft, cite textual evidence, write extended constructed responses, revise and edit writing, collaborate in academic discussions, and communicate their thinking effectively. These skills require students to interact directly with complex texts, annotate passages, organize ideas, and receive immediate teacher feedback.

Similarly, 6th Grade Mathematics requires students to develop conceptual understanding of ratios, proportional reasoning, integers, decimals, fractions, algebraic reasoning, geometry, statistics, probability, and financial literacy. Students benefit from visual models, digital manipulatives, collaborative problem solving, and opportunities to explain mathematical reasoning—all instructional practices that are enhanced through interactive technology.

Research consistently demonstrates that active student engagement increases academic achievement, improves retention of content, and supports differentiated instruction. Interactive technology encourages collaboration, strengthens critical thinking, and allows teachers to quickly assess student understanding while adjusting instruction to meet individual needs.

This project will directly impact approximately 215 students annually across two classrooms while providing instructional practices that can be shared among colleagues. The requested Smart Boards will support district goals of increasing academic achievement, personalizing instruction, and preparing students for college, career, and lifelong success.
