The Gift of Holding a Book
This project is to help students learn how to read during small group. Instead of students holding a paper book created by the current provider of Reading A to Z students will be able to hold a colorful paperback book meant to help target their current reading level. In first grade is where students have to make major waves in reading in order to not have any gaps moving forward to second grade therefore it is crucial for students to be engaged and excited when they are reading to learn. Districts across the states are suffering from major cuts and having colorful paperback books in both fiction and nonfiction is a major need and pleasure.
My classroom is a Dual Language One Way classroom, meaning all my students are considered native Spanish speakers. I want to foster a love for reading but also help build their English acquisition while they are learning to read. I strongly believe having these books will help my students feel excited and eager to read during the crucial hour of guided reading.
Small group reading improves reading skills by allowing teachers to target specific needs. It is during this time that teachers give instant feedback, and boost student participation. With the right books it can help students decode words faster, build fluency, and better understand texts. Activities that can be implemented can be a writing activity that aligns with the book, kinesthetic learning, and research with the nonfiction books. My project will enhance learning by fostering a love for reading to learn. At this tender age students enjoy learning with books that have color and texture. By having these books students will be able to learn how to read while enjoying a paperback book with pictures and photographs. This project supports the districts mission by helping students build a strong foundation in reading during small group.
