The project would be to begin an Odyssey of the Mind team for our school/district. Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem solving competition for students of all ages. Teams of students select a problem, create a solution, and then present it as a team in competition. Odyssey of the Mind emphasizes and develops creativity, teamwork, leadership skills, public speaking, and perseverance.
Odyssey of the Mind allows students the opportunity to bring the classroom to life, as they combine what they have learned with their own interests, passions, and curiosities. Since a huge issue facing education today is student engagement and motivation, Odyssey can help students feel the "need" for learning as they work on the solution to their chosen problem.
Odyssey of the Mind impacts student learning by providing a way to directly motivate students and help them understand how their learning connects to real-world "doing." As I would volunteer to coach a team, I would meet with them once a week to work on team-building, creativity, and the solution to their problem. With the grant funds, we can have an Odyssey team and cover the membership, team registration, and a competition t-shirt for students and coaches. One membership can cover up to 5 teams, however, since this is year 1 of this program, we will begin with one team. Odyssey of the Mind directly supports the district's mission of personalizing learning because it allows students to connect their personal interests with learning new skills to create an 8 minute play to demonstrate the solution to their chosen problem. Each problem has a technical aspect, such as balsa towers, robotics, performance, or engineering aspects. I feel that what Odyssey fo the Mind brings to students is so important because creativity fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation, while also enhancing emotional well-being and engagement. It allows students to think outside the box, approach challenges from different angles, and develop unique solutions, which are vital skills in both academic and real-world settings.
