Family Engagement at Home for Dual Two Way Spanish Language Learners - Ruth Carillo Image
Dual Two Way students are children that have a strong grasp in the English language, but are now challenging themselves and are learning the Spanish language. Facilitating games, activities, and practice material for them to use at home with their families is the goal of this grant. Parents will be able to borrow the bags and have an extra resource at home, once they are done, they can borrow a new bag and continue to develop their child's Spanish language.

Two Way Dual Language students are challenged with learning a second language. They are fluent English speakers that are learning Spanish, most of the time their parents only speak English, so they struggle to have that support at home to help them practice the Spanish language. My project will facilitate Spanish interactive games, activities, and practice material at home. My projected number of students that will benefit from this project is 44 students, plus all my future students in the upcoming school years. The material to practice is not easily accessible to students due to the excessive cost of the material. According to Liu, “ Active home‐based parental involvement can improve their academic performance, which also highlights the importance of home-school cooperation” (Ma, L., Liu, J., & Li, B. (2022). The association between teacher‐student relationship and academic achievement: The moderating effect of parental involvement.

Parents will be able to check out a bag from me with a game, activity, or practice material. All the bags will have an assigned number. Families will be able to help their Spanish language learner develop their language at home, enjoying fun activities. There is a high level of economically disadvantaged students in my classroom. Some parents aren’t able to invest in these types of necessary, but costly learning material. Allowing the parents to borrow the materials, will give them a large variety to choose from. One of the greatest benefits of this project is that students will be developing their Spanish language for their future careers. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States. According to Wayne P. Thomas and Virginia P. Collier, “In the United States, world language abilities are increasingly important to national security, economic competitiveness, delivery of health care, and law enforcement.”
