Writing with Wixie is an interactive program that guides students through many different skills and foundations needed with art, writing, and voice. It focuses on literacy development by focusing on phonemic awareness, word families, writing process, and retelling stories. In math, it builds skills such as addition and subtraction, understanding geometric shapes using vertical math tools. The program also reinforces the science and engineering practices, social studies foundations, social-emotional learning, and essential technology skills in first grade.
This project aims to address a critical need in our first grade classrooms: the development of student' writing skills, which key in building the foundation for academic success. Currently, the majority of students who enter first grade are below grade level in writing. Many students struggle to construct complete sentences that accurately communicate their thoughts and ideas through writing. Building a strong foundation in writing in is critical across all subject domains including reading comprehension, math problem solving, and science exploration.
Our school contains a very diverse population, in which, the number of ELLs is growing. With our community becoming increasingly linguistically and culturally diverse, the need for inclusive and targeted writing instruction has become more evident. This grant will support a writing program that directly serves about 175 first grade students across 10 classrooms. The program is designed to meet students at their current level and provide engaging opportunities to build sentence structure, expand vocabulary, and develop grade-appropriate written expression. By addressing the writing gap early, this project will not only enhance students current academic progress, but it will also build a foundation for future success in all content areas and grade levels.
Our district's mission is, "Write a little a lot." This is across the curriculum and departments in each campus. The program will enhance students' learning through activities that include scaffolding, text to speech, and templates to guide them. This program will enhance learning by guiding students through activities that include scaffolding, text-to-speech support, and a variety of templates to help them demonstrate their understanding of the skill. The program includes a range of activities from basic phonemic awareness and phonics skills to word families using built-in images, paint and text tools, and voice-to-text support. Sequential writing is provided in levels based on students abilities. This, along with blank canvases with built in images help them write and retell stories to display their comprehension. An array of templates are provided for students to practice and exhibit their ability of math concepts such as addition, subtraction, place value and number sense. In this program there are virtual maniplatives that help students through practicing math skills in an interactive and fun way.
Activity templates help guide them through sciences skills such as matter, habitats, interdependence, and a variety of other skills. Several other areas are covered with interactive lessons in social studies, social-emotional skills, and technology.
These activities can be used in a variety of ways to support students' learning. The flexibility we have with using them is endless. Activities can be used as exit tickets, stations, small groups, and informal assessments.
