Who's the Daddy? - Cathy Roberts, Cynthia Franks, Chyanne Mouton, IBK Chaney Image
Explore the field of Gel Electrophoresis in biology and forensic science. Gel Electrophoresis is a newer technology that allows for separation of DNA bands based on size and comparison of DNA bands to compare to others to determine paternity. So, Who's the Daddy?! We'd like our students to find out!!

The State of Texas has updated the Science TEKS and now includes standard BB.7(D): Understanding the applications of biotechnology, including gene technology. The implementation of performing Gel Electrophoresis would directly address the new Biology TEK set in place by the State of Texas. Forensic Science involves the collection, examination, and analysis of physical evidence to help reconstruct events, identify suspects, and ultimately, aid in the administration of justice. Forensic science draws upon various scientific disciplines like biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering to analyze evidence from crime scenes and other legal contexts. Gel Electrophoresis is one of the key components in analyzing DNA found at crime scenes to help identify suspects and bring criminals to justice. Allowing our forensic science students access to this equipment and helping them to engage in the process is equipping the students of Crosby to be on the forefront of college and career readiness in criminal justice or science related fields.

The first activity we have planned for biology students is to compare the DNA of puppies to two known possible father dogs. Based on the results of the DNA bands on the gel, students will be able to identify which dog is the dad. This can be used as an extension lesson by incorporating Punnett Squares to show possible outcomes by crossing the genotypes of the mom dog with both possible dad dogs also.
Forensic Science will incorporate gel electrophoresis with using DNA of suspects to determine the presence of the individual at a specific crime scene. These activities will all take place in the brand new science labs of Grey House 1 & 2 at CHS. Any student taking biology, honors biology, or forensic science will have access to this equipment and take part in the labs using the equipment during lab activities in class. This targets approximately 700 students this year at Crosby High School.
