Ink to Innovation: Empowering Digital Creativity - Skylar Thomas Utley, Courtney Shilo Image
Digital art is the future of modern creative careers. We have started integrating digital art instruction into our classroom using student iPads and the app Procreate. We now get to further enhance this learning experience with Logitech Crayons— a digital stylus that works seamlessly with student iPads and helps student create without limitation. No more finger drawing on the Ipad!

Digital art is the future of modern creative careers. Fields such as graphic design, animation, interior design, visual effects, and concept art increasingly rely on digital tools and platforms. As these industries evolve, so must our approach to art education. We have started integrating digital art instruction into our classroom using student iPads and the app Procreate. However, our students are currently limited to drawing with their fingers, which restricts their ability to create detailed, precise artwork. To unlock their potential, we need to introduce better tools, like the Logitech Crayons—digital pencils that work seamlessly with all iPads.  A reliable stylus typically costs between $50 and $100, which is not a feasible expense for many of our high school students. Last year, I made stylus purchases optional for our Art 2 students, but only 10 out of 60 were able to buy their own. As a result, most students were limited to finger drawing, which hindered precision and artistic growth. Even our AP Art students, who needed to make polished digital pieces for their CollegeBoard portfolio submissions, had to borrow my personal Apple Pencils to complete their work. This represents the need we have and it will be greater this year since my AP Art class has tripled in size. To make digital art accessible for all students, we are requesting two class sets of 30 Logitech Crayons, one set for each of our two art teachers. This will serve approximately 360 students across all art levels, ensuring that every student has equal access to professional-grade digital tools during class. Whether our students pursue art professionally or use creative thinking in other fields, exposure to digital art will give them a strong foundation for success in the modern world. Your support of this project will empower our students and put the spotlight on them!

My goal is to introduce students to foundational digital art techniques using iPads and Logitech Crayons. By the end of the nine week unit, 100% of students will create a digital portfolio of at least 4 digital artworks. In providing students with digital tools such as a stylus and the professional level software Procreate, our students will become more successful in digital art projects and competitions. This is relevant because it will prepare students for future careers by integrating industry-relevant digital art practices, aligned with real-world skills used in graphic design, animation, and other visual arts fields. Within nine weeks, students will be proficient in the basics of the app Procreate. Introducing digital styluses (such as Logitech Crayons) will significantly enhance the digital art learning experience by giving students the precision, control, and fluidity that finger drawing lacks. With a stylus, students can make more deliberate and expressive marks, utilize pressure sensitivity, and engage in more complex art techniques such as shading and layering. There are endless activities you can do with digital art. We spend 9 weeks just teaching the basics. They will be able to design their own stickers, animated shorts, school posters, and participate in digital art competitions for their school. These tools will be particularly important for students in Art 4 and AP Art, who are preparing college-ready portfolios and submitting digital artwork to CollegeBoard and art competitions. Digital art is becoming the backbone of today's creative industries. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2024), "Graphic designers, animators, UX/UI designers, video game artists, and visual effects artists are among the fastest-growing creative career paths, all requiring digital art proficiency". "Employment of special effects artists and animators is projected to grow 8% from 2022 to 2032, faster than the average for all occupations." Investing in these digital tools will build career readiness for students interested in the arts, which is one of the high school's goal for students. This project also aligns with the district’s mission of personalized learning by giving each student the ability to create art in their own unique style, through tools that match their learning preferences.
