Rain, Rain Go Away: Indoor Recess Enrichment for Rainy Days - Tymbree Jones, Samantha Stiles, Amy Conner, Jacqueline De La O Image
We would like to have some interactive indoor climbing cushions that students are able to build physical obstacle courses with. This project will give students something physical to do in alternative to regular in class recess on those rainy days that we often have throughout the year. Normally teachers just do dance parties, or free center choices, play-dough, stem boxes or developmental centers for indoor recess. Most of those activities do not require physical energy. Students still need to able to exert their energy in a physical way for recess on rainy days.

Students of the Pre-K age need daily physical outlets. When outside recess is not available there is very little indoor resources for physical outlet. We serve at least 300 Pre-K students who do not all receive P.E. daily. We only have one playground that is shared with the kindergarten students so each class only receives one 25 minute recess time daily. If the playground is not available for daily recess, Pre-k students are very antsy and fidgeting for a physical outlet. If we had more option for indoor recess we could accommodate the need for physical outlet on days we can not use the outdoor playground.

When students physical needs are met they are able to focus better, their bodies are calmer and at rest. This helps their brains grow and able to take in new information being taught. If there is a rainy day and outdoor recess is unavailable, all Pre-K students will be able to have recess in the designated area inside the building and still have their daily physical outlet met.
