The Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Store at Charles R. Drew Elementary reinforces and rewards positive student behavior through tangible incentives. Students earn points for exhibiting traits aligned with our PAWS expectations, Positive, Accountable, Willing, and Safe and redeem them for items from the campus store. This initiative supports a proactive approach to behavior management while promoting a positive school climate. Funding from the Crosby Education Foundation will allow us to fully stock the store with high-interest, developmentally appropriate items that encourage sustained student engagement and motivation.
As a Title I school, many of our students face economic hardships that can negatively impact motivation, behavior, and attendance. This project addresses the need for a consistent, equitable, and engaging behavioral support system that recognizes and rewards positive student choices. The PBIS Store creates opportunities for all students to be celebrated for their efforts, helping to reduce discipline referrals, increase on-task behavior, and promote a safe and inclusive learning environment. It also supports social-emotional development by encouraging goal-setting, responsibility, and self-regulation.
The target population includes all students at Charles R. Drew Elementary, which serves approximately 670 students in grades K through 5. Over 80% of our students are economically disadvantaged, and many face barriers that affect their academic and behavioral outcomes. The PBIS Store ensures that all students, regardless of background, have access to a system that acknowledges their growth and positive contributions to the school community.
The PBIS Store will be a structured, school-wide incentive system aligned to our Tier I behavior expectations under the PAWS framework. Students earn LiveSchool points when they demonstrate behaviors such as being respectful, following directions, or helping others. These points can be redeemed weekly or bi-weekly for items such as school supplies, books, games, fidget toys, sports equipment, or privilege passes (e.g., lunch with a teacher, extra recess). The store will be run by staff and student leaders, integrating leadership and financial literacy skills into the experience. Teachers and administrators will track data to monitor participation and adjust incentives based on student feedback and behavioral trends. The program will be promoted regularly in newsletters, morning announcements, and school assemblies to maintain visibility and enthusiasm.
