In today’s technology driven world, writing instruction can be very mundane and foreign to young learners who have little to no pre-writing experience. In the classroom, there is a need to enhance writing instruction to promote student engagement and ultimately improve writing skills. The resources in this grant, will provide an innovative approach to writing instruction that emphasizes proper letter formation, oral storytelling, grammar, and sentence construction. Let’s lead students “The WRITE Way” by engaging, encouraging, and challenging them to become confident writers.
In today’s technology driven world, writing instruction can be very mundane and foreign to young learners. Many students begin school with little to no pre-writing experience. In my classroom of 22 students, there is a need to enhance writing instruction to promote student engagement which in return will lead to an improvement in writing skills. According to Dr. Lori Friesen, students are more inspired and engaged in writing when student choice is built in, writing is made relevant and fun, purpose for writing is given, and when we focus on building student confidence. The writing resources in this grant, were chosen specifically for all these reasons. By adding more engaging writing resources to the classroom, students will be more excited, encouraged, and challenged to become better writers.
The WRITE Way will include writing resources for proper letter formation, oral storytelling, grammar, and sentence construction. If funded, these resources will be implemented inside the classroom immediately during whole group instruction, small group instruction, and utilized for student-led stations. Whole group instruction will be more relevant and fun with these resources. Students will develop confidence during small groups. Student-led stations will have choice built in and purpose for writing given. The academic impact of these resources will be measured through progress monitoring and readers responses. The targeted Kindergarten TEKS include K.10 and K.11. (K. 10 Composition: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts-writing process. The student uses the writing process recursively to compose multiple texts that are legible and uses appropriate conventions. K.11 Composition: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts-genres. The student uses genre characteristics and craft to compose multiple texts that are meaningful.) “The WRITE Way” is aligned with Crosby’s mission to produce literate, responsible citizens capable of learning and applying academic and social skills successfully in any life setting. Writing is an important skill students will utilize for life. These resources will leave a lasting impact on students by building a solid foundation in which they can build on from year to year. Let’s lead students “The WRITE Way” by engaging, encouraging, and challenging them to become confident writers.
