Writing at a much earlier age has become essential for the modern day student in Texas. The rigor is much higher but many times the motivation or creativity is lacking. As a team we thought of ways to motivate our students to write more purposefully and then present their writing as a podcast story on our show "The Innovative Elementary Writers Spotlight". Here the student read their writing in a podcast setting, our student interviewers interview them briefly and then the podcast is shared with the campus and community. We encourage writers from kinder to 5th grade to share their stories and build a writers culture like never seen before!

Reading along with a podcast builds confidence and literacy. Word recognition (or “decoding”) is the most crucial skill for very young students. Podcasts allow students to practice their listening comprehension of complex texts that are both conversational and formal, and the corresponding transcripts enable students to confirm their success. In addition, students learning English as a second language report that they like how they can read the words and promptly “hear how they’re supposed to sound.” Pronunciation and prosody — the patterns of stress and intonation used when people are speaking — aid in understanding, especially for English-language learners. We plan to set up the podcast center in the library. We will conduct writer interviews once a week, here we will attempt to interview at least 5 students from all grade levels who would like to share their writing out loud. Our podcast group will consist of 5th grade students. After the reading the podcasters may have a few questions for them based on the story. The entire podcast will be streamed as an audio clip and a recorded youtube episode on the school youtube channel. We will hold this podcast in our school library. The library is the heart of our campus, right in the center of learning and accessible weekly to all students. We want to open this podcast to all students of our campus, from our lower grades to upper and also our special needs students who's voices are rarely heard. We feel this grant will help improve student motivation to write purposefully. We know it will build stronger writing skills, reading skills, comprehension skills and listening skills.
