This project allows students working towards certification in different mechanical pathways to gain experience in operating an electric scissor lift. As students work on operating different equipment in mechanical classes, lessons on safety and operation could be facilitated so students gain not only experience, but also acquire knowledge that allows them to find positions of employment. The acquisition of the equipment also allows for students to gain experience by working on different projects to further their mechanical education for certifications. Overall, this piece of equipment will add to the mechanical shop that serves so many students and fill a need in several pathways to continue to build student experiences as they move towards their future.
A scissor lift will be used to meet needs on several CTE pathways that students participate in while working towards certifications and careers after graduation. Since students work throughout the year on different projects, the equipment can be used as a tool to aid in larger or more complex projects. The scissor lift, in conjunction with learning to use a forklift and other tools, will set up some students to pursue career paths in warehouse positions or industrial positions after high school. Also, those students interested in mechanical maintenance or automotive maintenance will gain experience to add to their experience when seeking those positions after graduation.
By having the scissor lift, I will be able to implement lessons that last throughout the year for students that include safety, maintenance and operation of the equipment. This impacts student learning by preparing those students that choose industrial pathways after high school and more importantly, add to their experience when building a resume. There are always different projects and numerous students collaborating together on projects in the mechanical shop so adding equipment and learning opportunities will impact 200-300 students a year through the classes CHS has offered to the CTE pathway classes. As students move forward and prepare to leave high school, as educators and members of the community, we have the opportunity to set them up for success on the career path of their choice.
