The daily practice of journal writing is so crucial to our learners. Writing helps with print awareness, creativity, fluency, response to literature, connections, and aids in the development of social and emotional awareness. Our kindergarten students can have the opportunity to experience a true journaling experience with primary notebooks and special writing tools that will help them grow as readers and writers.
Primary lined notebooks are not always available in the local stores and it makes it hard for parents to find the correct books from the supply list. Teachers usually end up with the wrong type of notebooks and are in need of enough to give to all students. Each school year, students are administered a readers response assessment each grading period which assesses their handwriting, writing fluency, grammar structure and comprehension of a story. The STAAR test requires students to respond by writing in their own words based on a reading passage. By using the primary notebooks as a daily resource, students will become better writers and have a solid writing foundation to soar in their continuing education. Not only will the students and teachers benefit from the journal notebooks, parents can be more involved with their child’s writing development at home by seeing their work and progress.
The primary lined journal notebooks are perfect for the emerging writers to use because of the lines being wide enough to write letters/words in. The journals will be used daily during word study and writer's workshop. Using them daily and consistently will empower students and help with their independence in class. Response to Reading tests are the district's writing expectation and the goal is to reach a 4. Another major goal for our district is for student's to have more opportunities to practice writing frequently. The journal notebooks will not only be used for writing, but for gluing pictures and words inside to become interactive notebooks. Students will always be able to refer back to their notebooks for help with any activity. Importantly, students will be able to apply their literacy power to other instructional contexts and improve their writing skills.
