Housing Who We Are - Dalia Henrique Image
Our classroom is not a traditional classroom. We have an open space for students to dance in, mirrors to check their technique and a wall with cubbies and bins. With increasing numbers in our classrooms, there is a need for students to have a cubby of their own to place their belongings in and bins to store their dance clothes in. They place their student self in the cubby and their dancer self in the bins. Once that is all done, they come join us on the dancer floor where they become successful dance students.

In the dance room, there are currently two shelf units of 25. That provides space for 50 students. Our classes are bigger than 50 and we have students who are leaving their belongings on the dance floor. We want as much space as possible to dance in because we are in a tight space. With three shelf units, we will have 75 available spots for students. They may also place their athletics clothes, instruments, other belongings that they carry with them throughout the day. The bins will serve for them to store their dance clothes in. We use the lockers for our star stepper team so we don't have a place for our dance students, but we do have bins. However, there is an overflow in clothes and I believe that have a grade level bin for each class will help the students feel at ease knowing that they can leave their items in the classroom than have to carry them to and from home every school day.

I want to implement this project to serve my students' comfort. As an elective teacher, I feel that I have a responsibility to help these kids decompress and learn that life is fun. Being active is fun, learning new skills is fun, is ok to have fun at school. I want to have my students feel that the have the whole dance floor square footage. When they dance and mention that they don't have space, it is up to me to find a way to give them their needs. Instead of this being a direct activity, this will help create space for the activities in my classroom. The routine in my classroom is to walk in and place your items in the cubbies, go to your class period bin and find you dance clothes, dress out in the locker room, come back into the classroom and place their clothes back in the bin or the cubby. At the end of class, they dress back out to their day outfit and place their dance clothes in the bins. They grab their items from the cubbies and leave the classroom to have a fantastic day every day.
