As a new 4th-grade ELAR teacher at Charles Drew Elementary, I’ve identified an exciting opportunity to enhance our literacy resources to better support our diverse student population. Our school is home to many bright, motivated students, including English Language Learners (ELLs) and those from various socio-economic backgrounds. Each student brings unique strengths and needs to the classroom, and with the right resources, we can help every child reach their full potential in literacy. Currently, our classroom would greatly benefit from additional leveled readers, especially for students who are building their reading skills. These books are essential for providing engaging and appropriately challenging material that fosters growth and confidence. While we have a solid foundation of resources, expanding our collection will allow us to better meet the individual needs of our students. Additionally, I plan to use any additional funds to purchase bookshelves that are not currently available in our classroom. This will create a more organized and inviting reading environment, encouraging students to explore books independently. This project will directly benefit approximately 40 4th-grade students in my classroom. I will also share these resources with the General Education 4th-grade teacher, expanding the impact to approximately 80 students. By enhancing our classroom with these tools, we can create a positive and supportive learning environment that inspires a love of reading and helps our students achieve academic success. Your support in providing these resources will be a valuable investment in the bright futures of our students.

Introduction: To address the literacy needs of our diverse 4th-grade student population at Charles Drew Elementary, I have developed a project with clear, SMART objectives. The project will focus on enhancing student learning through the acquisition of leveled readers and bookshelves, creating a more effective and inviting reading environment that supports differentiated instruction and fosters a love of reading. Specific: The primary objective of this project is to improve literacy skills among 4th-grade students by providing access to leveled readers tailored to their individual reading levels. The project will specifically target approximately 40 students in my classroom and will extend to another 40 students by sharing resources with the General Education 4th-grade teacher. Additionally, I plan to use any additional funds to purchase bookshelves, which are currently lacking in our classroom, to create an organized and accessible space for our reading materials. Measurable: The success of this project will be measured by tracking students’ progress through their reading levels over the course of the school year. We will use regular classroom assessments to monitor improvement in reading proficiency, with the goal of moving at least 75% of our students up by one reading level by the end of the academic year. Additionally, we will monitor student engagement through reading logs and classroom observations, aiming for at least a 50% increase in the time students spend reading independently. Achievable: This project is achievable with the support of grant funds. The purchase of leveled readers and bookshelves is a tangible goal that can be accomplished within the first semester of the school year. Once the materials are in place, I will immediately begin implementing the literacy activities, including differentiated reading groups, guided reading sessions, and independent reading time. Realistic: The objectives set forth in this project are realistic given the resources available and the current needs of our students. The school’s commitment to personalizing learning aligns with this project’s focus on providing tailored reading materials and fostering an environment conducive to literacy growth. Research supports the importance of leveled readers in advancing students’ reading skills, particularly for those who are behind in literacy development. By creating a well-organized classroom library, we will make reading materials more accessible and appealing, which is a key factor in encouraging independent reading and improving literacy outcomes. Time-Bound: The project will be implemented over the course of the 2024-2025 school year. The first step, purchasing the leveled readers and bookshelves, will be completed by the end of the first semester. From January to May 2025, I will conduct regular classroom assessments to track student progress and adjust instruction as needed. By the end of the school year, I aim to see measurable improvements in reading levels and increased student engagement in reading. Impact on Student Learning: This project will have a direct and positive impact on student learning by providing the tools necessary for differentiated literacy instruction. With the addition of leveled readers, students will have access to texts that meet them at their current reading levels, allowing for more effective and targeted instruction. The organized and inviting reading environment will encourage students to engage more deeply with texts, increasing their reading fluency and comprehension skills. This, in turn, will contribute to their overall academic success and foster a lifelong love of reading. Support for District’s Mission: This project aligns with the district’s mission of personalizing learning by ensuring that each student has access to reading materials that are appropriate for their individual needs. It supports our campus plan by addressing the critical need for improved literacy outcomes and creating an environment that supports student-centered learning. By providing students with the resources they need to succeed, we are helping to close the literacy gap and ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Conclusion: In conclusion, this project represents a strategic, research-supported approach to improving literacy outcomes for our 4th-grade students. By setting specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound objectives, we can ensure that this project will make a meaningful difference in our students’ academic journeys. With your support, we can provide the resources necessary to create a classroom environment that fosters a love of reading and empowers our students to succeed.
