Novel Study Books that Build Confidence and Successful Writers - Jamie Matula Image
One of the most empowering activities in fourth-grade reading is when we complete a novel study together in the classroom. These two books from renowned Newbery-winning author Jerry Spinelli highlight adolescent characters who struggle to fit in but develop relationships that help them develop self-confidence and succeed in life. What better message to share with our fourth-grade students? I am eager to share powerful books that build students up and help them appreciate their individuality and embrace their differences.

Just as Crosby ISD boasts a unique melting pot of learners from many socio-economic and racial demographics, so do award-winning author Jerry Spinelli's books. Last year, I read two of Spinelli's older books with my students. They loved them. These novel studies inspired incredible small group discussions and thoughtful writing. I am writing this grant to acquire two class sets (24 of each) of two of Spinelli's more modern tales. These books will be shared with 40-60 students. I am excited because "Loser" highlights how being different can lead to an incredible life. I want my students to be proud of their differences and strive to succeed.  The second book, “Eggs” tells how two complicated and struggling children forge a friendship and fill the void each is missing in their lives. I love strengthening the bonds between students. Jerry Spinelli's books always promote self-confidence, perseverance, friendship, loyalty, and individuality, which mirror the important qualities we try to instill in every child in our classroom. The two books I currently own as class sets were written in 1990 and 1997. The two books I hope to acquire were published in 2002 and 2007. I would be so happy to add these newer publications to my classroom library as I believe they are more relatable to my fourth-grade students born in the 2000s.

This grant will allow me to put the same book in the hands of an entire class and share these literary masterpieces with 40-60 students every year. As teachers, we are always looking for new ways to inspire our students and help them embrace their differences. Award-winning author Jerry Spinelli's books "Loser" and "Eggs" share believable and quirky characters my students can relate to. These books help students realize that it is ok to be different. This is so important for students' self-confidence and self-worth. In addition, these novels will inspire amazing whole-group discussions where students can make connections to their own experiences. In addition, these books will enrich students as they are exposed to worlds outside of small-town Texas. This year, one of CISD's mottos is "Write A Little A Lot." These books will provide numerous opportunities for students to share their opinions and reflections on what they have read. I will plan Short Constructed Response Questions so students can reflect on their readings while writing in the STAAR Test form. I am also planning STAAR Level comprehension questions.
