Based on the Science of Reading, Benchmark Phonics Intervention, is a comprehensive phonics program ideal for students performing two or more years below grade-level expectations.  Currently, 70 students in grades 3 through 5 are considered Tier 3 Reading students. That means they are reading two or more years below grade-level expectations. Because of the rigor of the new STAAR design, it is imperative that we get the students they need to be able to not only read but understand what they are reading.Benchmark Phonics Intervention aligns with the tenets of Structured Literacy, shown to be beneficial for struggling students. It includes 4 levels of intervention. Each level, 30 units focused on a single skill with 10 lessons per skill. It is multi-modal to foster language learning and it comes with a wealth of decodable texts. Benchmark will give me the flexibility to customize the pace, intensity, and focus of learning as needed. I will use this program with my Tier 3 RTI students in grades 3 through 5.
