As a grade level we used Lowman Curriculum for our STAAR review. As team we felt that it was very effective and rigorous resource to have. We have found that Lowman offers Daily Warm Up, Daily Assignments and Unit Test. The materials have been designed to be simple, effective and easy to implement. This resources has shown in improve classroom engagement and less teacher burnout. We saw first hand that differentiation as well as new STAAR item types imbedded within the assignments.
Daily Warm Ups: These are spiraling warm ups that will help student be prepared for their day.
Daily Assignments: Allow students to build confidence while practicing the skilled learn for that day. Assignments are a mix of new skills and previous learned skilled to help with retention.
Unit Test: These test get the students get ready for state testing. The questions are designed to mimic STAAR. These test also cover content most that shows more often on STAAR.
Science Weekly uses inquiry based learning, incorporates reading and ignites curiosity. Math is also tied into the Science Weekly with data and measurement skills. Science Weekly also follows the 5E model and includes engineering processes. This resources helps encourage student investigation and problem solving.
These assignments will better match what state testing will be like while matching the rigor. The grades and problems solving we see from students along with test scores will prove effectiveness of these resources. Lowman and Science Weekly are designed to build classroom engagement and problem solving skills. These are not designed to be labor intensive for teacher preparation and student completion. These resources will be used independently, whole group as well as small group. These resources also allow for differentiation to best help student growth.
These resources will meet our district mission by allowing students to work together and build confidence in their learning. Classroom discussions and small group will build social skills while applying academic learning. Grades and scores will build students responsibly for their learning. We will have about 150 third graders coming in from the 2nd grade for the school year of 23-24. Our campus is rated a B- with 37% Math proficiency.
