The Mac Mini is the perfect tool for both Audio/Video students as well as Digital Design (Yearbook) students. It is a versatile and powerful tool that puts the capabilities of an iMac in a tiny, student-friendly package. This grant would be used to help buy Mac Minis for a CTE Classroom to further the understanding and improve the hands-on experience of our CTE Students. These full-desktop computers would allow AV and Digital Design students the opportunity to work with a tool that is considered an industry standard to further their educations as life-long learners and, one day, members of the work force. Currently there are only 4 computer lab classrooms on our campus and of those 4, only 3 of them have a full classroom set of computers to use for the CTE Department. We have 6 CTE teachers whose scope includes working with computers on our campus and 3 of them are currently missing out on the chance to teach our students using industry standard equipment such as PCs or Macs. Our students have been limited to the confines of the iPads for the last few years, but when working toward certificates such as Adobe Photoshop, there is no way to prepare our students with only the iPads in hand. While wonderful for teaching small and basic concepts, the iPads' abilities are severely limited when one takes into account all of the information and processes a CTE student has to master before taking an Industry Certification test such as Adobe Photoshop. The only way in which our students will be able to succeed on these industry certificate exams is through thorough, hands-on experience. Hence the need for more desktop-style equipment that would allow more CTE students to have the opportunity to gain industry standard experience. This year, Principles of Arts, AV, Technology, and Communications as well as Digital Design will have a significant percentage of 8th graders who would be eligible to take their Adobe Photoshop Certificate test in their 9th grade year. Beginning to work towards another fully functional CTE Computer lab on our campus is a great first step in getting more of our students through industry certifications. This grant will put the CTE department in a position to add 10 more workstations to our growing classrooms. Fully functional Mac Minis would give students a more realistic understanding of how applications work in the industries we study. While iPads are wonderful for productivity, the true powerhouse of design and creation is the Mac. The students would be able to complete tasks with greater understanding of industry expectations should they be allowed to complete their work with the tools that the professionals use.
