"Inching" Students into Lifelong Readers! by Valerie Perry & Sharon Brown - NES Image
We want to implement a great way to spark excitement for reading in our students. We want to find a way to generate the same book-fair excitement for our students, but 24/7, not just twice a year. What better way than the Inchy Bookworm Vending Machine. It will offer a great way to not only encourage our students to excel on a personal level but will also help us put high-quality books into the hands of our students!

The Inchy Bookworm Vending Machine offers a great way to not only encourage our students to excel on a personal level but also helps us put high-quality books into the hands of our 715 students in first through fifth grade! We are constantly searching for ways to promote positive behavior on our campus. This will be a new and exciting way to reward students for attendance, behavior, academics, and leadership. It also allows us to develop stronger readers by giving them books that spark their individual interests. This vending machine will help build an in-home library for our students while increasing reading engagement and fighting the “summer slide”. Traditionally, reading scores for children go down in poor communities during the summer months due to a lack of cognitive stimulation and activities. This vending machine would bridge this gap and help alleviate this problem. Research showed that book vending machines helped stymie the traditional summer slide that has plagued children’s achievement. Giving child and families access to print, with books that are of high interest helped improve children’s school readiness scores and comprehension skills.

This vending machine offers a great way to incentivize students to read and promote positive behavior. As a reward for practicing and displaying positive behavior, achieving accomplishments, and maintaining excellent attendance, students will collect custom coins to use in the Bookworm machine to receive their very own book. Many of our students struggle with reading, partly because they just have not found a book to spark their interest and love for reading. Using the Inchy Bookworm Machine offers a great way to not only encourage our students to excel on a personal level but also helps us put high-quality books into the hands of our students! The more opportunities we have to put books into the hands of students, the better chance of making them a lifelong reader. Many times, reading seems like a chore or duty rather to students than a gift. This vending machine will provide students an exciting opportunity to receive books that spark their interests. Our district’s mission is “moving forward” and our campus is working towards “moving forward” by helping build lifelong readers.
