Flexible seating and focus tools by Laura Oneil - CMS Image
This is my 5th year teaching special education in Crosby. Most of my students struggle with staying seated during instruction and would benefit from flexible seating that allows movement while at their desks for notes or to keep their hands busy when listening to instructions. These tools will help my students be able to silently move and “fidget”, which will not distract their classmates. I have also included a classroom table top crane game to use as reinforcement of desired behaviors and deeds that include smaller fidgets they can earn.

Most of my students struggle with math and having “the wiggles” makes it even harder to be successful. Being able to address and mitigate this while in the learning environment has made a huge impact on the small scale that I have personally invested in these type of items. Your help will be greatly appreciated and bring a smile to both the students and this teacher.

This project will address the individual students need for movement while having to be seated during instruction and individual work. It also helps to address the need of other students who can be easily distracted by other students' movement.

By providing the students with additional seating options within the classroom, they will be able to remain seated for longer periods of time, able to focus on the lesson/activity, and improve student relationships by not being a distraction in the classroom. These seats and rewards provide students with an opportunity to learn locus of control of their own movements and help them articulate their own body's need for movement. With these items in the classroom they will also learn to be responsible in their use, while also having little rewards to look forward to earning for jobs well done, staying the course and showing grit while working.
