Let's fill the Vending Machine by Claudia Londrigan, Jamie Matula, and Kim Houser - NES Image
Our campus is really excited about customizing and filling the Inchy Bookworm Vending Machine. It will rekindle the first thru fifth grade students to handpick their favorite books as a reward! Students are incentivized to continue to read and given an opportunity to become lifelong readers. As a campus we are helping the district obtain their mission with moving forward to become better readers!

715 students, 23 ELA teachers, 2 resource teacher, 3 Intervention teachers specifically, as well as all faculty/staff at the campus, including the librarian.

It is necessary to fill the Inchworm Bookworm Vending Machine in order motivate our first thru fifth grade students to read more by offering a variety of options to spark students’ interests.

-Promotes literacy
-Fight the "Summer Slide"
-Allows students access to books that might not be able to afford them otherwise
-Allows for rewards for behavior, grades, etc. to be through reading
-Supports our campus’s reward system by giving out tokens for the vending machine
-Assists with Restorative Discipline curriculum through our EBIS team
-Promotes the love of reading
-Improves fluency
-Increases vocabulary
-Follows along with grade level TEKS, which state students should be doing sustained reading on a daily basis
-Increased reading means improved scores for the STAAR test
-Increased reading means better grades and understanding of ALL core classes

If grant is awarded it will be used in conjunction with additional grant “Inching Students into Lifelong Readers” The purpose of this grant is to obtain the upgrades which hold different size books instead of the standard size. Additional book sizes consist of large picture and medium books. For example, our first graders typically read large or medium picture books. In order to cater to all ages, we will need the upgrades in shelving. Any money remaining from the purchase of the vending machine will be used to obtain books. The Inchy Bookworm Vending Machine will be centrally located on the campus, so that all students can access it readily throughout the day. The hope is to the promote the kick-off of the placement of the Inchy Bookworm Vending Machine on our campus in the fall. Once it arrives, we would purchase books from Scholastic. In addition, we would work with our principal to figure out a reward system for giving out tokens. It could be through earning a Pawsitive behavior award, respect, loyalty, etc. Tokens could be given out for our award assemblies each 9 weeks where we honor All A Honor, All A-1 B, and Cougar Pride. Tokens could be given for random acts of kindness with our PBIS team. There are various ways we could give kids tokens to get a free book from the vending machine and every month could develop different ways. We love that we have flexibility with it so that it’s not always going to the same students. Our campus serves approximately 715 students, and we are increasing every day. We serve bilingual students that are learning the English language. The Inchy Bookworm Vending Machine will additionally promote reading for diverse students that have diverse interests. To better reach students, we will include a rich array of historical, biographical and narrative books which include multicultural themes and topics that are designed to attract young audiences and keep them reading. Although some research showed that TV or movie related books were popular, students also chose popular nonfiction books with historical figures of heroes, reflecting the culture of the community. J.K Rowling said it best, “If you don’t like read, you just haven’t found the right book.” The Inchy Bookworm Vending Machine will give all students a better opportunity to find the right book.
