Mission Possible is a new reading program developed for all of our district 3rd graders. This program is designed to motivate and to help our students develop a love for reading that will hopefully continue throughout their lives. The educational benefits are endless as well. Readers are leaders, so if we can motivate even our most challenging students to read, then we are ensuring our students success in whatever our students decide to accomplish in life. This will be a fun challenging program with thoughtful missions for our students to accomplish each month with rewards and even friendly campus competitions all connected to improve students reading.
Teaching reading can be challenging. Not only do you have to teach comprehension and skills that go along with it ,but you have to ensure that every student can read fluently and practices reading often.
We understand that in order to learn we cannot find fun and interesting materials for everyone all the time, however, if we can include ways to differentiate and motivate reading through a program for reading practice, then our students will improve automatically through their own interests.
We have approximately 500- 3rd grade students this year at all of our elementary campuses. We would love to provide them with a fun, challenging way to improve reading skills as well as give them the tools to find their own "love" for reading through the reading program.
This will piggyback on what we also need to accomplish in the classroom and give a fun more motivational way to get our students to read multiple books throughout the year with a purpose.
Mission Possible is designed to be implemented along with our curriculum reading TEKS. Teachers have a structured curriculum to follow with many skills that our 3rd grade students need to master for success. This program follows the TEKS in a way that promotes what is being taught in the classroom with more reading practice that is more individualized and rigorous.
We know from research that our students need to be able to read fluently to be able to show success in any and all subject as well as in life in general. This program is designed to create an atmosphere for learners to want to read and to continue to read even after the year is over.
We will kick off the program with a Pep Rally involving all 3rd graders together. This will get everyone excited!!!
Each month beginning in September, our teachers will be given an envelope marked "Confidential". This envelope with have a mission inside for students to accomplish. (All missions are not too advanced and are challenging but attainable for all students).
At the end of the month students "secret agents" who complete the mission get a "key" to the safe (cardboard box that looks like a giant safe) and will find the reward. We will also choose a student from each class who has the best reading record to take photos of in Secret Agent clothing and place them on the hallway as Top Agents.
This program will take place from September to May with a few month off due to schedules. At the same time we will be recording minutes read in the classroom and have a campus vs. campus friendly competition as well.
In May we meet again at a Final Pep Rally to give our awards and to announce our winning campus with the most minutes read.
One of the main goals of the districts mission is to create leaders who are successful in life. This is one way to develop the skills needed to do just that!
